Prerequisistes

Knowledge in basic networking is required, based on long experiences in the field or previous attendance of the “Layer 2 Networking” (IES-L2) course.

This course covers the following:

TCP/IP protocol and general concept

  • Explain the difference between “connection oriented” and “connectionless” mechanisms
  • Explain the concept of TCP/IP protocol suite
  • Describe the roles and mechanisms in each communication layer
  • Describe which networking devices operates in which communication layer
  • Understand the PDU format in Ethernet frame and IP packet
  • Explain how error detection in Ethernet works
  • Describe the difference between “store and forward” and “cut through” mechanism
  • Explain the concept of ”Power over Ethernet” and its standards

Ethernet and IP addressing

  • Explain the interaction of MAC address and IP address
  • Explain IPv4 classes and subnets
  • Calculate IP range, subnet ID and broadcast address in IPv4
  • Explain the interaction of “packet switch communication” and “unicast/ multicast/ broadcast communication”

Application Protocols

  • Understand basic concept of well-known protocols e.g.
  • DHCP, ICMP, ARP and SNMP
  • Describe DHCP communication flows the role of each DHCP packet
  • Understand the function of DNS in IP network
  • Explain the role of ARP protocol in IP and MAC addresses mapping
  • Explain interaction of ICMP mechanism and TTL value
  • Describe the communication components required by SNMP protocol
  • Understand the difference between SNMP v1/2v and v3
  • Explain the difference of SNMP operations

Infrastructure and transmission line

  • Explain basic concept of network topologies
  • Understand roughly the evolution of Ethernet standards e.g., 10/100 Base
  • Understand the basic concept of Ethernet communication over fiber optic.
  • Describe required communication components in fiber optics communication
  • Calculate power budget in optical communication
